Overview of Courses Offered
The "Making Friends" Social Skills Class is an seven to nine week social skills training program for children and teens with PDD-NOS, Asperger’s Syndrome, high functioning autism, ADHD/ADD, sensory integration disorder and other learning disabilities. This is a fun and interactive class your child will LOVE, and you will love the progress you will see in your child!
The curriculum is adapted from the teachings of Michelle Garcia Winner, Scott Bellini, Carol Gray, Jed Baker, and others. Lessons focus on helping children understand their own thoughts, emotions and intentions as well as those of others around them. Children are grouped by age as well as skill level. Curriculum is customized so that children who continue in the program for multiple sessions learn increasingly advanced skills.
While the classes are fun and activity-based, this is more than a social skills play group. Classes are structured to engage students in learning practical skills and techniques which they can use in everyday life. Parents are kept apprised of new learnings and "key phrases" which they can use to help their children translate classroom success to the real word. Flexibility is an important foundation of the curriculum, and weekly "flexible challenges" ensure that students practice newly acquired skills in the home, school and community environments.
